[ARCHIVED] Spotted Lantern Fly in Southborough

Spotted Lanternfly

The Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) has been spotted in Southborough in 2023, so the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture (MDAR) has provided documents on educating the public on their impacts, how to control infestations, and how to check your vehicles to stop the spread.

MDAR reports that the Spotted lanternfly is an invasive sap-feeding insect from Asia that was first found in the United States in 2014, in Pennsylvania. While the main host plant of this pest is tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima), SLF attacks a variety of trees, shrubs, and vines, and has the potential to impact a broad range of agricultural commodities, including grapes and wine, apples, peaches, and maple syrup. The first known infestation of spotted lanternfly in Massachusetts was found in 2021.

You can check out MDAR's website, which includes a map of infested areas and where to report sightings of SLF.
